Greetings,
My name is Shawn Ammon and I am excited to be assigned as the lay pastor to Oakland UMC, Hancock UMC, and Silver Creek UMC. This is my first time as an "official" church employee. I have been around the United Methodist Church my entire life. My dad is a retired pastor. He has had churches in South Dakota, Kansas, Nebraska, and Iowa. My last name might be familiar to you, because he was the District Superintendent for Southwest Iowa before he retired. I have done many things around the church as a member, singing in the choir, playing hand-bells, serving on committees, and chair of the administrative council at my last church, St. Paul Benson.
Since graduating from Grinnell College, I have lived in the Omaha metro. I worked at Creighton University helping with technology in the libraries: setting up PC's, helping people find information resources online, administering library servers, and providing off campus access to the library collections. I went to High School in Griswold and worked part time at the Hy-Vee in Atlantic. When I was younger, I would spend the summer with my grandparents in Deadwood, SD. My aunt and her first husband had a restaurant and were part owners in a hotel in Deadwood, and so I spent summers as a host, busboy, bellboy, prep cook, elevator operator, and at a tourist information booth there.
One of my last pastors in Omaha has been encouraging me to think about ministry as a second career for several years. This spring I retired from Creighton and told her I wanted to start the process to begin as a part-time lay minister. Very quickly things have fallen into place for me to sell my house and move here to be your full-time pastor. When you say yes to God, it is amazing how the spirit moves to clear the path for you.
I hope you are patient with me as I learn about you and your church and your ministries. I believe I have gifts and grace to be a pastor, but I will be learning on the job. My hope is that together we will grow stronger in our faith and bring new members who want to join in our service to the community.
